Insert unfunny pop culture reference here - Blockbuster (Spoilers, but you weren't planning to watch this anyway)

Hello whoever might be out there,  I hope you're having a great summer holiday, or simply a great day. I was having a boring day, so I scrolled through my Netflix recommendations to see what I can watch next despite my watch list already being absurdly long. Now, usually I am adamantly against comparing media because every piece of media is different and it isn't fair to hold the work of one team against something entirely different. But this time I am excusing myself as I was recommended the ten episode workplace sitcom " Blockbuster " by Netflix solely "because [I] liked Superstore." I do like Superstore , I love it even. I'm currently about half way through re-watching it (although I watch it on Disney+ now because adverts suck) and I will then immediately start it again. It's on my rotation of shows, and is the only one on that rotation that actually has a plot that runs through it rather than episodic plots. So I watched Blockbuster . The premis...

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier - Soul (Spoilers)

Hello whoever might be out there,  I decided to watch Soul again, like I'm on some 2020 nostalgia train that felt the need to do a few more loops for whatever reason, but this time I got off at Disney+ for a trip to Crisis Lane. I am only 17, which sometimes feels like equal parts exciting and dread-filling. So what better to watch than the story of a man who couldn't be further from me, learn about the meaning of life through a corrupt corporation's underappreciated creatives? "Soul" is thought provoking and tear jerking. It led me to wonder whether my personality can be summed up into six brownie-badge style components? Am I the same for everyone? Which traits I display are the real ones? What do I really love? What's my "thing"? In my own self-absorbed way, I could imagine myself being a lost soul. No true passions or desires. Sure people that know me could probably spew up a couple. I love Splatoon an unhealthy amount, or maybe they'd go with...

The beauty of Amelia - Disability and Feminism (Spoilers)

Hello whoever might be out there,  My task for my sociology homework is as follows: Research disabled characters in a TV show/film you like. Answer these questions: Are they represented by a disabled person? If not, why is this the case? Apply your sociological theory – e.g. are they presented as inhuman as Longmore suggests? We go for Bob's Burgers obviously, and the episode which, to me, has the best representation of disability is "Amelia", season 13 episode 22. But it is impossible to look at this episode from the perspective of disability alone, especially given that it is a primarily feminist episode. The answer? Look at them both in tandem. Getting to spend my college breaks watching my favourite show feels like an easy way out of doing "proper" work, but these thoughts aren't exclusive to this watch, or even this episode. Bob's Burgers is filled with the unserious and the serious, and it is what makes it such an incredible watch if you haven...

I haven't forgotten you

Hello whoever might be out there,  I haven't forgotten you. I know you're there. Always in the back of my mind. But there hasn't been a spark or a moment. Nothing that caused me to come sprinting here like a lost child being found. I've done stuff, sure, lots of stuff. I took part in a debate competition, there was Christmas and New Year's Day, my birthday, mocks, and probably a bunch of other things I could write about. How I am doing an album a day this year or how I had a job for a while. But nothing felt particularly striking. I mean sure, I could tease out a million stories if it was life or death, but I have control over my art (a little bit at least) and bog standard recounts wouldn't do anything to anyone. Even the nature of this very post is ironic, I feel like I spend most of my time here ranting about how I have nothing to say. How I am nothing more than a poser who has a blog for the aesthetic (which I feel like I should clarify is not true).  Which ...

Make our pavements great again

Hello whoever might be out there,  We need to make our pavements great again. If you know anything about me, you will know I am very protective over my pavements. I am a life-long pedestrian, my Mum doesn't drive and my Dad... Basically I have walked everywhere my entire life so I have been through the whirlwind known as the pedestrian experience. Cyclists, dog walkers, cars. The trinity of kryptonite for the average pavement-user. An unparalleled rivalry spanning generations. Cyclists belong on the road. That isn't even an opinion, it is written into law, and for a very good reason. The average cyclist can reach speeds of up to 20mph, the speed limit for residential areas. If a car were to come at you at that speed, you would rightfully be scared of being hit, so why is that any different for cyclists? We can't pretend that being hit by a bike doesn't hurt; wheels pulling at your skin, handlebars and pedals digging into your side, all with a human body on top. And it i...

Art should never be censored

Hello whoever might be out there,  You are all owed a post, and to that I apologise. Starting college has been a whirlwind of an adventure and my brain is so void of ideas, I have no idea what to write about. As I am writing this, I am kind of hoping that I will be dragged towards a topic. All I can think of these last weeks is a mish-mash of linguistic terminology, sociological theories, and the pure drama of "A Streetcar Named Desire" with a few ethical debates mixed in there. Talking of debate, I have a debate on Thursday, proposing that "Artistic expression should never be censored". I think my point is going to revolve around the associations of censorship directly coinciding with a loss of freedom. When you think of censorship, where do you think of? North Korea, Russia, Afghanistan. And I am sure when you think of places with restricted freedoms and rights, similar places come to mind.  I'm pretty certain the opposition will focus on right wing censorship...

A review of the basics

Hello whoever might be out there,  I'm back with yet another new obsession, because at this point that's the only reason why I come on to this blog. This time it's Superstore. It's a good show. I'm on Season 4 at the moment, and I've only been watching it ten days so... I got this app that lets me review each individual episode. It's called Serializd, it's so good, would recommend (go follow me, MaeDreams). I like reviewing things. Rating things. Reading what other people have said about things I've rated. But the Superstore reviews are, and I mean this in the nicest way I can, TERRIBLE. We need to start teaching people what a review is again, because despite there being an option to tag your review as a spoiler, people are clearly farming likes instead of actually leaving a review. Writing a quote from the episode is not a review. Explaining the plot is not a review. Spoiling the ending is not a review. I want to know what you think about it, I alre...

Perception versus performance

Hello whoever might be out there,  I had to finally cave in and announce the existence of my blog to my friends like a town crier. Spending three hours on a ramble about Lego Friends is apparently what it takes for me to cave in, and that's fair enough really as I didn't want to let my hard work and effort go to waste, not that they are the type of people to care about Lego Friends at our ripe old age anyway. It got me thinking about what actually changes now I know for definite that there are people other than me reading this. I have always felt as if I behave completely differently depending on who I am around, and I am now tasked with the skills of performing to all the audiences at once. It's an odd feeling. But I like it. I can try and claim that I am nonchalant about who is reading this, but in reality I would love it if hundreds of people were reading and commenting on here. Attention seeking? Maybe. I work hard rambling to my heart's content, some reciprocation ...
